In the 1990s, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) involved mostly keyword stuffing and directory submissions to make it complex and Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven that focused on user intent. It used a lot of high-quality content and focused on Google’s EEAT (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness). As SEO evolved, it began to shift to moving from raw link quantity to quality, mobile optimization, and voice search. AI is now being used more than every by prioritizing instant and relevant answers over simple keyword matching.
SEO in “The Early Days” of the 1990s was mostly characterized by its “black-hat” tactics. As previously stated, this included keyword stuffing of meta tags, hidden text, and spammy link exchanges. While these are still very much used today, SEO was known for this in the 90s.
The early 2000s was coined as “The Google Revolution.” The introduction to Google’s PageRank shifted focus to backlink quality which rewarded authorities rather than just keyword density.
“Content and Structure” makes up 2005-2015. This is where algorithms began punishing low-quality content and spam allowing the ability to prioritize user experience, site speed, and structured data.
The last era is the one we are in presently: The User-Intent Era spanning from 2015 to now. This is where a shift began to semantic search and understanding natural language with AI with mobile-first indexing. “The AI Revolution” comes into major play here. It focuses on EEAT and AI-generated search experiences.
There are four major shifts in SEO strategy throughout these years. Keywords, backlinks, content, and technology.
- Keywords:
- Keywords moved from exact-match keyword density to semantic keywords, topic clusters, and natural language processing
- Backlinks:
- Backlinks changed from sheer volume to authority, relevance, and trust signals
- Content:
- Content shifted from short, keyword-stuffed articles to comprehensive, high-quality, and EEAT focused content
- Technology:
- Technology moved from desktop-only to mobile-first indexing, voice search, and AI-drive results
Modern SEO is nwo a holistic digital strategy focused on providing the best possible user experience.

Its always really interesting to hear just how much SEO has changed in so little time.
I really like what you said in this. I think it is interesting how fast things change on the internet like our class speaker said “The old school method…like a year ago.”
