PageRank is a Google algorithm used to assess a webpage’s quality based on the quantity and quality of the links pointing to it. This algorithm treats links as votes; pages that receive more high-quality links are deemed more important and are more likely to rank higher in search results. The primary objective of PageRank is to determine value and credibility by evaluating links originating from trustworthy websites. The PageRank algorithm prioritizes ranking websites that receive natural backlinks from reliable sources. When a page is linked to by strong and trustworthy websites, it serves as evidence that the page’s content offers value to the user experience. Simultaneously, this algorithm helps prevent attempts to manipulate rankings by emphasizing the quality of links rather than merely focusing on their sheer quantity. An equally important role of PageRank is organizing content based on its level of importance. This helps establish a system in which authoritative pages are recommended and stand out within specific topics. Previously, Google displayed scores ranging from PR0 to PR10. This metric was displayed via the Google Toolbar. This system is based on a logarithmic scale, meaning that each level marks a significant leap in importance. Although the feature was retired in 2016, PageRank continues to play a crucial role in SEO today.
