Many believe that AI is soon coming for their jobs, but how true is this for the SEO industry? Can LLMs really replace a Pro SEOer? This is a question that I was thinking about while choosing my topic for this week’s blog post, and I chose to explore it more.
In order to gain more information on how well AI can actually do SEO, I opened up ChatGPT and asked it to make me a website about cats and improve the SEO to the best of its ability. After copying the html from ChatGPT into a GitHub repository and hosting the site online (you can see it here if you’d like), I ran the site through a handful of SEO analysis tools.
I at first tried SEMrush, however the site audit never completed. This isn’t the fault of either ChatGPT or SEMrush; I believe that GitHub has restrictions that make an analysis a bit more tough. Since SEMrush didn’t work, I tried another free site, SEOptimer. This did return results, and surprising ones at that. In onsite SEO, ChatGPT did a fantastic job at making the site readable and usable, scoring A+ in all of those categories; however, where ChatGPT fell short is with inbound and outbound links, scoring an F in these categories.
When looking at the results of this “study” (to which I use very lightly) it’s pretty clear that the use of AI for SEO does in fact produce good results; it is important to realize however, that while AI is good at onsite optimization, the task of improving offsite by way of inbound and outbound links is still largely up to us.
