Ethical and Effective Link Building

Building backlinks is still a crucial part of SEO, but there are right ways and wrong ways to do it (both morally and effectively). Google’s algorithms are always getting more sophisticated, so in this blog we’ll go over current strategies you can use to build backlinks in 2025.

What are backlinks?

Backlinks are links from other websites to your own. Lots of backlinks tells Search Engines like Google that your site is more credible on the related topic.

Ethical and Effective Strategies

Focus on High Quality

Focus on securing backlinks from sites that are credible. The more reputable or authoritative the site is, the better that looks to Google’s algorithm. A few backlinks on big sites will likely be more effective than a hundred links on small sites with few visitors.

Some less ethical marketers may try to create lots of spammy or irrelevant backlinks, but Google will recognize this as an unnatural pattern of links and penalize it. Building relationships with more companies, influencers, and other popular sites will help you network and create more natural backlinks. Favor authentic connections, because Google does too!

Create Backlink-worthy content

Why should another site link to yours? You need to give them quality content that they want to reference or use. Try and publish high-value resources like guides, research, or unique data to encourage more sites to reference yours. Using engaging content like infographics and videos can be particularly eye-catching to other sites, who may want to use them.

It’s tempting to just push content that is full of keywords but not particularly engaging, it’s quicker and you may think you’ll get the same SEO benefits. But, thanks to Google’s constantly improving algorithm, keyword stuffing is not effective anymore. Plus, low-effort content will just drive real customers away and discourage backlinking. No one wants to reference a blog post that has no interesting content or purpose.

Monitor your Backlinks

To ensure you’re getting the best results, regularly check on your backlinks. There are many tools, like Google Search Console or Ahrefs, that enable you to check your backlinks for quality and relevance. You should also find websites that mention you without properly linking to you and request that they add a link for proper attribution.

Great post on backlinks! Backlinks are super important and can be overlooked or done wrong. Personally, backlinks are one of the more confusing parts of SEO for me. I have been taught what they are, but I feel like I need to actually see how they work and implement the use of backlinks myself to truly understand them.
