While art and technology can sometimes seem at odds with one another, SEO in the arts can be a powerful way to put art in people’s hands. As the world of technology changes, and commerce shifts more and more online, artists must find ways to get their art to places where consumers can see it, whether that is an exhibit, a specific art piece, or art classes.
Reaching Your Audience
Like with any SEO effort, the first step to success is to know who your core audience is. For artists, this may be more difficult than with other consumer goods, as art is a non necessity purchase. This is where simple market research can be a huge asset. By talking to art collectors and vendors in your area, you can discover which people tend to be buying art in your price range. Once you have an idea of your buyers, you can begin to generate questions and phrases that your customers are likely to search for when looking for you art and generate content to fit that.
Selling Art with SEO
SEO in the arts is especially helpful in selling art. A powerful way to utilize SEO is in the descriptions and meta tags on an art e-commerce site. While SEO may tend to call to mind only blog posts, using key words and phrases in the alt tags and descriptions of your e-commerce site can help immensely in getting your site to rank.
SEO for Art Courses
Art courses tend to have a different audience than art sellers do. They have different price points and different consumers, and so artists and art teachers will have to do further market research to establish their core target audience. While they may not be able to utilize SEO as much in their descriptions, images and their meta tags are still very applicable for art courses. In addition to this, blog posts about events and the benefits of art courses are a great way to begin ranking for art businesses.
At the end of the day, there are many ways for artists to use SEO in the increasingly digital art space. While it is not the only tool at their disposal, it can certainly be a powerful one.

This is a very interesting article. I don’t know much about the art industry so it helps me better understand how SEO can mix with art.
This is awesome! The article you found is very interesting and I think the differences in user intent that you highlighted for the art courses just goes to show the significance of knowing your personas.
Awesome post! It caught my eye immediately. As an artist, I really like how you brought in art to SEO and connected the dots. You brought up some fantastic points and my mind has been expanded.
I do not think I would have ever thought about this, but it makes sense. Being able to put descriptions and use keywords would give a tremendous upside when art is really just a picture or object that cannot be “seen” online.
