In class today, I was pretty intrigued and very interested in the beginning of Googles life. Professor Sweet briefly mentioned its upbringing but I wanted to take a deeper look into “Backrub” and how it turned into the number one search engine of Google.
Diving into Googles own About page, Backrub was started by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in their Stanford University dormitory in 1995. With rapid growth and attention, Backrub started to gain some eyes from investors which eventually landed them a $100,000 investment. Through this investment in 1998, they were able to move the operations out of their Stanford dorm rooms and into a garage and start what we know as Google Inc. Google to this day is notorious for being unique and quirky and this has been a part of their identity since their garage office days. To this day, we can see their creative capacity through their large headquarters in California as well as through their search engine and the products that they sell to consumers.
What I find pretty interesting is their intent with Backrub or now Google. It is quoted that they wanted to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” This is now known as Googles mission statement and personally, I am fascinated that in 1995, they felt a need to organize the web and make it accessible. It is impressive to see how dominant Google has become and thinking about it, it makes total sense. From the beginning as Backrub to the now well established and dominant Google, the company has desired to organize the web and to this day their mission is the same as what they imagined back in their college dorm.
Now thinking just specifically about search engine optimization, Google is the industry leader because they are well established but they are established because they take what they do very seriously. With almost 30 years of experience, Google has been increasing their efficiency and accuracy at ranking search engine results pages and their constant effort at being the best is what continues to keep them at the top.

I find it so interesting that Google has been able to maintain their brand identity and position for such a long time. I like that you highlighted their original mission statement and related that to SEO. Great blog!
