Bringing It All Together – Composition Of A Good Photo #7

This is it! The final week of our Composition Of A Good Photo series where I walk you through Lloyd Belchers Composition tips and what they look like! Today, we'll take a look at a quick wrap up and summary, as well as one final photo that takes all of these tips and highlights each one individually!

The five tips we looked at through our series were Framming, Narrative, Symmetry, Angle, and Leading Lines. Each one of these tools are unique techniques to change your photographs at will, but the best way to use these is use each one at the same time!

Oh Yeah, It's all Composition-ing Together

We took a look at this photo last week for Leading Lines, and now we can take a look at how I used all 5 of these tips to create a great photo!

  1. Frame - The linemen on either side of our wide receiver subject frame him in a way that highlights him not only as the standing subject, but also with our focus, he's literally the only one focused in the play!
  2. Symmetry - Simple enough, both offensive and defensive lines are symmetrical on either side of the photo, further emphasizing the importance of the subject directly in the middle!
  3. Angle - I squatted down for this photo to be eye level with the linemen. This allowed me to get into the play, playing into the narrative we'll see later. A higher standing angle wouldn't have been able to get this eye level view of our linemen
  4. Leading Lines - We use the two offensive and defensive lines to lead right up to our subject in the middle with some space, utilizing our two lines leading right to where we want people to look!
  5. Narrative - Utilizing the frame and angle of the linemen, we can tell the narrative of the unfocused blurred linemen being the violence and chaos of the game. We then have the crisp, waiting wide receiver playing as the slow, but focused and skillful aspect of the game!

This is how we can use composition to our advantage to create a beautiful piece of art every time we pick up the camera!
