What is a "Quiet Shot"?

Quiet Shots are a photo outside of the usual action of a game. This can be a standing or sitting shot, a wide panel shot, or anything that doesn't require an athlete making a big play. This week we'll take a look at three different kinds of these shots, and how to tell a story with them!

This type of photography is mostly used for story telling. These aren't big highlight plays or something to get the blood flowing. They're used to show the emotion of the athletes and other side to the game. Every sport has big eruption moments sure, but to get there, there is a level of calmness to the game we can capture as athletic photographers.

Top Three Types of Quiet Shots

The Standing/Huddle Shot.
- This shot is incredibly easy to find. Any timeout or pause in the game doesn't mean you have to pause being a photographer. You can use timeout shots effectively because players are standing still, allowing you to get creative with your angle and composition! Standing shots just take looking away from the ball, and finding someone on the back of a play, alone on the field. This tells a great narrative off ball of the player's body language!
The Bench Shot
- Primarily, positioning yourself near or around the bench is incredibly easy and you can be creative here too! Do you take one up close? Maybe far away to get the full picture of all the players that make up the backbone of the team? You can be creative here!
The Environmental Shot
- This one takes a little work to find. Sometimes the focus doesn't have to be on the players. Having a focus on the environment you find yourself in can be an amazing tool to back up and take a photo of the GAME, not just a piece of the game. As an athlete myself, I know each venue is unique and capturing the essences of the venue can be create quiet shots with loud personalities as each place you take photos has a personality of it's own!
