Knowing our competition in business is very important in optimizing SEO. SEO can not be accomplished properly without knowing our competition because we do not know how to market ourselves differently than other businesses.
Business Examples
Competition is different in every field of business from “The Best Dog Groomers” in my area to “Cheapest Place to Get a Smoothie” in my area. Both have different markets and clients. This is why no matter what you may go into there is always a way to obtain more clients. Some business practices work for totally different companies like giveaways. We as business owners need to realize that our competition is also trying to do the same thing, and it comes down to where our morals are. We can either steal each other’s business out of malice or we can be respectful and correctly advertise to show that we are not leading customers on. However, the business world is cutthroat and whatever company is at the top in their category will be the only one that will stick around. This is not entirely true. Companies like HOKA, NIKE, and Under Armor all are in the activewear/ tennis shoe sphere. But these have a few differences like NIKE and Under Armor have a much bigger market for more activewear products. HOKA’s main market is luxury tennis shoes that are typically more expensive than NIKE or Under Armor. Each of these companies knows their competition and their strategies and uses them to each of their strengths.

Knowing competition and how to differentiate yourself from said competition is a core part of all business, not just SEO, but specifically in SEO, its definitely important to make certain the way that your page appears on the internet is in-line with the way your business functions.
The take you gave with the shoe brands is a great example of how important differentiation is. Being unique compared to your competitors is a huge way to get a share of the customer market. People have different needs and wants, so finding the ones that aren’t being met and giving them what they want is huge. Using keywords related to your unique product or service is going to allow searchers to find you more easily when they use the same words in their search.
