SEO for a Photography Business

For my project this semester, I am choosing to build a website for my photography business. Over the past few years, I have taken engagement photos and various photos around campus for the newspaper, the entrepreneurship department, and for the marketing and communications department. Later this year, I will be taking photos for a few weddings, which I’m really excited to do.

However, for this instance, I would love to focus on sports. Ideally, I would like to work in media for professional or DI collegiate athletics. In the past, I have taken photos for men’s and women’s tennis, the football team, and the soccer team. Last summer, I had the opportunity to take photos for the Riverhounds, Pittsburgh’s professional soccer team. While the spotlight will be on sports, I’ll also have a smaller section dedicated to event photography.

My audience will be team photographers scouting for entry-level photographers or team managers from different schools looking for a photographer. In order to tailor SEO to my website, I already have a list of keywords to emphasize on the various pages:

Examples: sports photography, digital sports photography, action, action shot, collegiate athletics, professional, Pittsburgh, photographer, portraiture, events, media, media day, candid sports photos

I plan to select a niche within sports photography, which will most likely be football. However, this semester I will be expanding my skillset by taking photos of basketball and baseball. For now, I will focus on the sports that I’ve worked the most with. I also plan on working around Pittsburgh, so my keywords will also reflect that.

In order to drive traffic, I plan on creating a blog with a few posts that describe the events that I have taken photos at and what I learned from them. I did something similar for my design portfolio. I believe potential employers would like to see that the people they are hiring truly understand their craft.

I that sound really interesting, I wonder if you have a specific reason for those sports, that make them more photogenic than others.

This is a super interesting blog post. I think it’s super cool how you are already thinking ahead for your photography career. Having keywords already defined will definitely help you during the creation of the site. Having secondary keywords as well will definitely help you improve in rankings. Being a football photographer would be a neat career path. Having the blog to help promote the photos you take at the different sporting events will definitely help you to separate from competitors. Being an athlete I enjoy looking at live action shots so I would definitely check out the blog to see what results you have posted.
