5 Keyword Brainstorming Strategies for SEO

Before getting deep into research, it’s important to start by brainstorming or “brain dumping” important keywords related to your audience, product, and service. Before researching, take advantage of your current knowledge of your audience and your idea of products and services, as well as word dump keywords you think would be applicable. Get out a sheet of paper or open a Word doc and let’s get started!

1. Products and Services

Take a moment to reflect on the value you’re bringing to your customers. What are the specific services you offer? If your products or services were on a menu, what would you list? How might your prospective buyers think about your services and goods? Since you’re just getting started, list them in the terms that you understand them. Then, go back and think about how a layman would term some of the problems you listed to generate more terminology.

    2. Problems and Pains

Think about the main problems you are solving for your customers. Reference your previous list of the solutions you offer and try to match each with the problem it is solving. What reason do customers buy this product? What makes your product relevant? What problem do competitors have that your product doesn’t?

    3. Solutions to the Problem

Similar to your listing of your products and services, frame them in terms that present them as solutions to the problem. What solutions are your customers looking for? What questions do they have about their pain? What do they consider to be the solution to their problem or pain that your product solves? How might they search for an answer to their problem?

    4. Highlight the Features

Look back on your first list of the products or services you offer. What are the features or benefits of each? Is there something that differentiates you from competitors in the way you approach your solution, your company’s values, or is there a specific audience you can cater to that competition doesn’t? What features of your product or service are in high demand? What makes it unique?

    5. Narrow Down your Terms

Now that you have a hefty list of terms, consider adding similar terms by adding modifiers. Examples of modifiers include location, age, price point, features like color, number, and more.

Each of these categories should provide a good starting point to think outside the box and brainstorm as many keywords as possible. Once you have a good-sized list, be sure to keep it and update it as ideas come! It will also serve as a solid foundation for further research and refining of current SEO practices on your website.

I really liked how you highlighted that each step of the process should point back to the problem the customer is facing and the value that your company brings to solve that problem. I feel like often times people focus on the product more than the root problem. It reminds me of when Prof. Sweet says “no pain, no sale”. I think you did a great job putting a diverse topic into 5 digestible strategies!
