Keyword clustering involves grouping together similar, topically related keywords and creating content around the cluster rather than a single keyword. This is useful for generating organic traffic because, by targeting multiple different versions of keyword phrases that your target users might be searching, you have a higher chance of being discovered for your content topic.
In order to generate these clusters, you may do a large brainstorming session of your own, but it can also be helpful to use tools such as Semrush, Wordstream, etc. to generate closely related keywords or multiple versions of ones that people use to mean the same thing. Starting off by brainstorming your own ideas gets things moving, but then you can put your ideas into tools like Wordstream to see whether or not those keywords will actually drive traffic or if they are in high demand by users. If they’re not driving much demand, it might be a good idea to pivot and/or use a tool like Semrush or even ChatGPT to generate some different ideas related to your topic.
Additionally, it can be useful to see what your competitors are ranking for. You can do this by using tools like Semrush to search your competitors’ domains and it will analyze their sites for the keywords they rank for. This will give you an idea of keywords you can try to outrank them on. It may also show you ones they haven’t covered that you think are gaps that you could fill.
Once you have your keyword clusters established, you want to make sure you integrate all of the chosen keywords into your content. Whether or not you’re the one writing your content, you want to keep a close eye on how/whether or not your keywords are being used because, obviously, this is where SEO research is actually put into practice. Whether or not you actually use your keywords that you’ve come up with defines whether or not you gain rank in the SERP.
