FOUR Myths & Mistakes

For this week I read the section called “Ten Myths and Mistakes” in SEO For Dummies. After reading I chose four of the ten to share with you.

#1 (Myth) It’s all about Meta Tags
Often times people think that keywords and description tags are things to revisit after doing your meta tags. However, this is completely wrong. According to the text, most meta tags are not incredibly important, often not being used by search engines at all. Furthermore, without keywords within the content, the search engine will not index what you want it to.

#2 (Myth) Multiple Submissions will Improve your Search Position
As major search engines go, multiple or automated submissions, don’t help. Multiple submissions to smaller search engines may work in your favor, but it won’t help with any major search engines. In comparison, it is increasingly more important to get plenty of links to your site.

#3 (Myth) Bad Links to Your Site Will Hurt Its Position
Another common myth is that getting unrelated links to your site will hurt your search engine position. This isn’t quite the case. They will not necessarily help, but they will not hurt either. As long as it is not a like farm it is okay.

#4 (Mistake) Your Pages Are “Empty”
This mistake is a huge problem for many companies, the pages often have very little for the search engines to index. In some cases, the pages have little to no text that a search engine can read, because the words on are embedded into images. In other cases, all the text may be legit, but there are very few words, or not the right keywords. Remember, search engines NEED content to read and index. When you share text content to a search engine, ensure the text is doing the most for you as well as the search engine.

This was a great explanation of some myths in SEO, and I liked how you explained each one in a straightforward way. The 4th myth about “empty” pages really stood out because it shows how content has a huge impact on rankings.

I like how this shows SEO success comes more from solid content and links than from technical tricks like meta tags or repeated submissions.

My research has frequently warned me about myth one. However, I did not realize that point three was a myth.
