Link building is when other websites link back to your own website to improve its authority and search engine rankings. Backlinks come from the most trusted sources and serve as an insight for others to understand your reputation. Backlinks also make it much easier for people to find the resources you’ve created, because they are linked to you. Google has been reducing its backlink usage, but they are still very important because they help people sort through content to be able to focus on what is actually worth paying attention to. Backlinks still remain a ranking factor, a discovery path, an authority indicator, and EEAT enhancers (experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness). In order to achieve these benefits, you must create linkable content. This would include visual assets (charts, diagrams, infographics), original research (industry surveys, studies, data analysis), free tools, and ultimate guides. Earning backlinks is only worth your time if these links are used on high-value websites and opportunities that ensure good conversion to your site. The best way to find these high-value websites is to identify those that are authoritative, such as industry associations, trade journals, and some reputable blogs. These sites must also be topically relevant to you and your site; otherwise, conversion will be low. The most efficient way to find reputable sites is to search your topic with “.edu”, “.gov”, and other trustworthy domains. The sites that appear in these searches are ones that would be beneficial to link build with. The success of backlinks relies heavily on PR and the perception of the site you are linked on. When you find a reputable website that you would like to be linked to, it is important that you send them a personalized pitch as to why they should backlink your website on theirs and express how it could be beneficial to them as well.

Overall good insights on what backlinks are good for I do think that one should be careful in the number of backlinks they try to get as too many could be damaging to the site in SEO as well.
