For Who? — Target Audiences and their role in SEO

Picture of arrows sticking out of an archery target.

When working on the SEO for a website, many webmasters skip the step of researching their target audience. They don’t realize that by skipping this step, they are potentially loosing out on both high ranking, and potential sales on their site!

Similarly to marketing, your target audience is the group of people you are making your product — or website for. Once you have an idea of what this group would be looking for, your job of optimizing your SEO becomes a lot easier. Why waste time and money making your site rank highly for cat treats if your site is talking about dog toys? Your audience likely isn’t searching for cat treats in hopes of getting something about dog toys. Additionally, learning about and creating for your customer allows you to more personalize their experience. Since you are only focusing on one group, you can provide them with value they likely couldn’t get on a site that serves many targets.

Fantastic… but how do you find out what/who to optimize your site for? That is where keyword research, tools like SEMrush, and most importantly your brain come in! Think “who is buying/using my company’s product?” and “Why are they looking for this product?” and “What would they search for to find this product?” All of these help you to understand what your customer is looking for, and allow you to jump to the top of their results page.

I really appreciate you bringing this up! I thing some people ignore how important knowing your audience is. Without knowing who you are really targeting, you really can’t be successful.
