Humor and SEO

In class, we talked a little bit about humor and Search Engine Optimization. Humor can either attract people or put them off. It can be funny or overbearing, corny or too serious. If done right, it becomes more relatable to the users and makes them want to learn more. So how can you know the extent to which you should go with humor?

#1: Take risks with humor, even on a serious website

Humor is engaging and can draw the user’s attention in faster. It makes the brand more personal, which keeps the user on longer. It is good for it to be professional, but adding some funny statement, or having a semi humorous video to put a face to the name

#2: Humor is attractive if used appropriately

Too much and it seems like a joke, too little and it feels impersonal. There aren’t specific rules on when you can and cannot use humor, it is kind of up to what you think. Get other people’s opinions on the matter, and as long as the humor is related to the topic, it can be useful.

#3: Humor should set up for something substantive by way of content or further action

Humor shouldn’t be there to fill space. It needs to bring the user further into the website and provide them with the information they need. The humor also needs to be accurate with the brand or business, otherwise you aren’t being honest to the users. It is important for writing compelling content, as it is one of the most important parts of optimizing your website to best draw users in.

Great post! I also thought this was fascinating when we discussed it in class! It’s awesome how a seemingly boring topic like insurance can become so engaging through the use of humor! Thanks for sharing!
