The NFL’s Use of SEO

National Football League

The NFL is an organization that almost everyone in the United States knows about. Studies show that about one hundred million people tune in to watch the annual super bowl each year, so numbers don’t lie here. The NFL’s use of search engine optimization (SEO) is a big reason that they continue to grow and thrive in success. The NFL has even begun to grow attention and viewership outside of America due to their SEO efforts too. Excellent and frequent content helps captivate people, their offsite optimization and social media use is exemplary, and even their inbound and outbound link activity is great.

Content & Awareness

It is no coincidence that the NFL’s great use and production of content, leading to successful SEO, allows their organization to remain successful. Everyone knows that the NFL has a primary season and an offseason, and surprisingly enough the NFL is still highly active with their social media even in the offseason. This is challenging but rewarding for them because it keeps others aware of the organization and all of the changes, partnerships, and more that is going on with their corporation. Content should be consistent, but quality is just as important. In SEO it isn’t quality over quantity, or quantity over quality, but rather both quantity and quality. The NFL’s content holds a good example and standard for other organizations and companies that want to have qualitative and quantitative content.

Site Optimization

The NFL has a pretty fantastic and professional site as well. They utilize keywords very well, with the most popular being basic: football, NFL, scores, games, etc. Their site is professional and visually appealing. There are photos and videos all throughout the first page of the site, all of which contain links. The NFL’s use of onsite optimization and inbound links is something other companies should want to model after. The NFL has so many things connected to their organization and have networked so well that there are so many practical things to link to. As far as offsite optimization goes, the NFL has networked and gotten on the good side of many companies that relate to sports, and even some that have nothing to do with sports (like food). The number of outbound links that they gain, and recommendations made by other sites speaks for how successful the NFL is with SEO. Their social media activity is another great way that they have been actively engaging in offsite optimization.
