As we dive into the world of SEO, we will inevitably encounter the term “backlink” frequently. So, what exactly does a backlink mean, and why does Google place such significant importance on it?

Simply put, a backlink is a hyperlink leading from one website to another. For example, if a social media influencer publishes a review of a travel destination or a specific dish, they will typically link directly within their post or video. This allows users to click through immediately and evaluate for themselves whether the location is worth a visit, which is precisely what we call backlinks. We can conceptualize them as “votes of confidence”; the more backlinks pointing to your site, the more likely Google is to prioritize and recommend your content.

With the rise of AI, many have questioned the continued relevance of backlinks. However, by and large, backlinks remain one of the top three signals Google relies on for ranking. The simple reason is that backlinks are rooted in credibility. While AI is certainly useful for providing immediate information, the content it generates is often written from a highly generic perspective and frequently lacks personal insight and specific detail.

To put it precisely, backlinks hold value because they are authentic; they prioritize the user experience, a quality that compels search platforms like Google to recommend the content they point to.
