Recently I had the privilege of hearing Richard Schulz, the founder of Best Buy, speak. I was extremely impressed with his humility and his desire to interact with students. His lecture outlined 10 tips for being a successful leader in an organization.
- One team one dream. The focus here is on selling the vision to your team in an effort to get buy in from each member of your employees.
- Focus on the Customer ALWAYS. Your ability as a business to meet the needs of your customer is absolutely ESSENTIAL.
- Build Partnerships. If you don’t have a skill and/or have a need on your team then find it.
- Reward and Acknowledge the Source of Great Work. This can be achieved by publicizing employees that are doing impressive and exceptional work. Rewarding great work will empower your employees by creating an environment where everyone’s work is appreciated, especially when full effort is being shown.
- Always Prepare for Change. The marketplace is constantly shifting and in flux, being flexible and innovative is a must.
- Fail Fast, Move on. Pretty self explanatory: if you are too afraid to fail you won’t discover new things and if you don’t fail fast then you will waste resources.
- Learn from Your Mistakes. In life you are always learning and growing, Mr. Shulze emphasized the importance of evaluating your mistakes to learn from them.
- Control Your Own Destiny. As entrepreneurs, one of the perks of starting your own business is your ability to sort of control your own destiny. Take advantage of that opportunity.
- Rewrite Your Rules For Your Business. When writing and re-writing the rules of your business you must have a customer centric approach.
- Integrate a Meaningful Set of Values that Everyone Understands.
These are all great mindsets! one thing that is underlying through all of them is the fact that their focus is all on the customer.
It’s crazy that these all seem so simple but they are rarely all followed by businesses today. Seeing someone as successful Richard Schulze put such as emphasis on these tips is relaxing because it shows us that it doesn’t take some secret complex formula to become successful.
Every point was packed with value. I can tell you read a lot, a feature from some of the most successful beings out there. I saved your post to my CPU to look every now and then
