I had an experience in New York where I was purchasing a small speed boat to use on lake Chatauqua. The lady I purchased the boat from was a very kind elderly woman. During the buying process the old lady appealed to the emotional side of selling and explained how she just “wanted someone to take care of her boat”. Money was not her priority in the transaction. After she asked me lots of questions about why I was interested in the boat, she eventually got to my “why” which was that I wanted a reliable boat to use for fishing on the lake. Once she realized that I was a good person who had good intentions with the boat, she was more than happy to sell to me for 1,500 dollars with the boat lift included. Overall, it was a great sales experience on both sides for me and the nice woman.

  1. I think this is a very good experience for you to have for sure. It’s cool to see how some of the sales concepts we are currently covering in class are happening in our everyday lives. Also, the fact the seller got to your “why”, you saw the impact it had on you as the buyer, and her as the seller. When the seller was getting more in depth with you, what were some of those key questions that she was asking you? Also, did you feel obligated to take good care of the boat since she said the only thing she wants is to have is someone to take good care of it?
