Hello again, everyone! This is bit of a lighter topic for you tonight. Since TV shows and movies are such vital part of our curriculum and learning for this class, wink wink, I thought I would do a compilation of some shows I thought would be rather appropriate.

  1. The Office: Where would we be without The Office? How much we learn from that show! Seriously though, whenever we watch a perfectly timed clip of The Office, I am always amazed with how relevant it actually is. After learning about these sales topics in class, I am able to pick them out so clearly and see them in action. We are able to see the good, the bad, and the ugly.
  2. Mad Men: Ok, while not quite as relevant as The Office, I feel like it deserved an honorable mention. Throughout the show, you are able to watch Don Draper’s marketing pitches and you can see interactions with all his fellow employees. Similarly to The Office, we watch Don Draper’s pitches and see what works and what doesn’t work. All the old sales tips and tricks, think our beloved greasy used car salesman, definitely seem to be action here.
  3. Shark Tank: The quintiessential business show, no matter the context. There is always something to be learned, whether is is humility from Mr. Wonderful or something else! I’m not sure what necessarily what more needs to be said about it? It’s great, if you don’t watch it, watch it, if not simply for the crazy ideas then for the great business tips!
  4. The Profit: Kind of like Shark Tank, this show is geared a little more towards business/entrepreneurship than sales specifically but there is still a lot to be learned here. As each episode progresses, you are able to see how the business went wrong and what is causing it to fail. How much ya wanna bet that with some better sales, more customer focused, that they would do a lot better? Highly recommend this show no matter what, it is always very interesting to see the drama as the make over is happening and then the end result.

Well, I hope this was interesting and gave you some new shows to watch or reminded you of how much you like some old ones! I know it definitely did for me! Happy Sunday night!

  1. The Office is definitely a great show to look at to see many bad sales techniques, however, they do often throw in more subtly sales techniques that are good. Furthermore, Shark Tank is a great show to watch sales in action as different new businesses fight for a chance to gain the money of investors. Getting on this show and then making a deal with one of these high end investors also can help to make your start-up look very impressive.

  2. I love shark tank! It’s so interesting to see how the entrepreneurs handle themselves in front of several millionaires/billionaires. The interesting thing about Shark Tank is that the entrepreneurs are not only trying to sell their business, they are also trying to sell themselves at the same time. That creates an interesting dynamic that I think we can all learn from.

  3. Thanks for making this post so relevant to us as college students. I can’t think of anything more relevant than The Office! You make a great point though, we can definitely learn what to do (or often what not to do) in sales situations from the TV shows we watch all the time! I have yet to see an episode of Mad Men, so I will have to check it out!

  4. I have only seen the office and shark tank, but they are so fun to watch and also do provide great sales techniques. They do it in completely different ways. The office sometimes shows you how exactly not to do things, while shark tank is more of a high pressure situation and what to do in those.
