We spent a significant amount of time in class debunk myths surrounding the topic of sales. Some of my favorite lectures have been the ones where we focused on the stereotypes of salespeople. It’s important to understand these lies about sales that our prospects believe in order effectively persuade and inform.

Sales Misconceptions - MyStartupLand

When going into situations, I want to be able to remember these myths we’ve debunked in class so I looked for an article from mystartuplab.com that describes them.

  • Salespeople are born with it. – You can learn anything. Even “naturals” have to learn how to learn to adapt to various selling styles and get their own experience. Sales is a part of life, you can always learn more.
  • Sales is about lying – Lying during the close dooms you to fail. Overpromising or blatant falsities ruin relationships with customers due to the discipline of repeated dealings.
  • Sales is a shark tank. – competition shouldn’t discourage you from going into sales.
  • In sales, you make big bucks – salesmen suffer the most from laziness.
  • Sales is about traveling and partying – Traveling allows access to great destinations, but exhaustion is a real thing.
  • Sales is about technique and experience. – Technique is not everything. You also need to remember that product knowledge and product passion play important roles along with the regular sales tactics.

  1. The one that really gets me is “salespeople are born with it.” You may be born with an outgoing personality, or a closed off one. However, what people frequently forget is that attunement is needed in order to match the pace of your customer. Only then, can you truly say you’ve mastered the art of selling.
