As the semester closes and classes wrap up I started to reflect on the ideas and things I learned this semester. At the beginning, I had a preconceived notion about sales. I told myself, “I would never become a sales person. They are deceitful people just trying to get money out of people to make money rather than lookin for out for what is best for me.” And as there are some sales people who are quite like this, there can be ethical and positive aspects to sales. Here are some of the concepts that I blew my mind and caused me to look at sales from a different perspective.

  1. I am continuously selling things even when I don’t realize it. Everyday through different things, whether it is class, with friends, an interview, or other activities. I find myself selling ideas, concepts, or even what we should do for the weekend.
  2. Sales doesn’t have to be just a standard sales person selling a product (usually a car) to someone. Sales can range from selling cars, to ideas for a startup. For me, I will come face to face with having to sell my idea/concept to many people for starting up my own company.
  3. SHUT UP- It is so important to be a good listener rather than trying to sell the benefits and features of a product. It is so much more beneficial to ask questions and listen. I use this method with my friends and their problems, Instead of telling them how to fix something, I ask them questions for them to figure out the best solution for themselves.
  4. Sales is actually something I am interested in.

The stereotype of sales is completely incorrect and negative for most cases. I am so grateful for this class to initiate a different perspective for me.

  1. I have noticed some of these tendencies as well in myself as the semester has gone by. When my girlfriend and I are trying to decide where to eat dinner, for example, I’m usually the one now trying to sell her on a specific place!
