Recently, I was messaged on LinkedIn about a job opportunity, so I interacted. The lady who had reached out to me connected me with her associate, who immediately texted me within an hour. I answered the call, and she immediately started talking. I felt under pressure and unsure where our conversation was going. I could tell she was trying to answer questions I didn’t have and assuming my pains and needs. Still, she used questions to sound interested in me.

During the call, it felt very forced and gave me little room to talk. Yes, it was a job opportunity, and I was certainly going to sell myself if I needed to, but I wasn’t given that chance because it was all about the business, which she never even gave me the name of until later. She scheduled another meeting with me a couple hours later. This was speeding things up, which made me feel out of control. Still, I was willing to learn.

We did a Zoom call five hours later, giving me little time to do anything to prepare myself. On the call, she jumped straight into the business. The questions she asked were all geared towards her business and her ideas. Even when she did ask my opinion on things, she twisted my words and forced an opinion on me. And this was all done quickly, giving me little room to even react. I nodded my head, smiled, and listened. Did she listen to me? Or was she waiting for me to shut up?

But, through all this, she was kind and generous in allowing me to learn despite me having no knowledge in her field of work. Still, was she prospecting or did she just jump on the gun? She did mention building a relationship, mentorship, and offered benefits she felt were crucial to the reason she did the job. Overall, the experience was jarring and unpredictable. Between her charismatic questions and bold selling, it was whirlwind, where she was making sure she was always in control.
