What it an Ambivert?
An ambivert is an individual that exhibits qualities of being both an introvert and extrovert. Research has found that the different ways we react to different stimuli is all psychological. In some instances individuals might even be able to tell if somebody is an introvert or extrovert just by their facial expression in the environment they are in. Ambiverts both enjoy being around people and having their alone time. I am classified as an ambivert and I really enjoy being around friends but also need my alone time.
What’s so good about being an Ambivert?
In terms of sales, ambiverts have proven their effectiveness and shown that introverts and extroverts really aren’t the best for sales. Adam Grant conducted a survey of over 300 individuals and found that ambiverts make the best salespeople. Having characteristics of each is an asset and can help because ambiverts are typically more flexible, stable, and intuitive. Flexibility is helpful in conversations because it leads to adaptive situations and contexts. Stability is also important because ambiverts offer sensitivity to introverts and extroverts by giving them the ability to relate to both sides. Last, intuition is also important because ambiverts have a better understanding of when to speak up and when to shut up.
Testing Ambivertion
Daniel Pink, a very entrepreneurial minded man in every sense of the word has a test to determine whether you are an introvert, extrovert, or an ambivert. His test includes situations and puts you in the hot seat for each one, he asks about alone time, being with friends, being the center of attention, and many other things. His test will then give you results from the answers provided. Personally I am an ambivert but before I had even heard of such a thing I had always thought I had characteristics of both. I like this simple description of what an ambivert is. I also was tested as an ambivert, but with more introverted tendencies. I know when to speak up, but a lot of the time I will not because of the fear that it is the wrong thing to say, then to not have the opportunity to speak about that thing again.
