The business world is all about innovation. Moving from one great idea to the next, however, one staple of the business world has deemed itself to be innovation proof, the business card. Since their humble beginnings in the 15th century to their continued modern popularity the business card has been one of the primary methods of passing along contact information. However, with the dawn of the internet age quickly changing how most business is done, why does the business card still have importance?
Although the business card is relatively low tech and hasn’t had an innovation there are some distinct qualities that have allowed it to survive well into the digital age. The first reason that the business card has still survived is its simplicity. Their size and shape allow them to be easily carried and passed around. Another reason why they are still effective in the modern business world is that they are universally used. It is fascinating that the modern business card is used throughout multiple cultures and although there are multiple different rituals about how to deliver them they are still as important.
The business card still has the ultimate importance of building bonding between business contacts and regardless of the current business climate the internet will never take the business card away.
This is interesting to read after Cameron’s comment in class on how at his networking event, the “business card” was replaced with a transfer of contact information on an ipad. As he was saying this, I was thinking that it sounded very impersonal. I think the reason the business card will stay around is because the added personal touch. Its like a hand written thank you note- those will never loose their significance.
Very true. Business cards are such a great way to make things personal and I agree that they’ll continue to be around for awhile.
