After the New Year, my dad and I decided to trade in my Ford Explorer for my first truck, a 2016 F-150 King Ranch edition. We went to a dealership named Jerry’s Ford in Leesburg, Virginia. When we went down to negotiate a deal for it, our salesperson’s name was Sean, and we had previously spoken to him about the truck. The trade-in deal we had was still very low for the new engine we had that was put into my Explorer at 100,000 miles. They only wanted to give us $1,000 for it, and obviously, we talked them up to just over $2,000 by the end of it. Although the trade-in price wasn’t the biggest of our concerns, we were still getting a good deal. The biggest concerns were the automatic running boards that come out as a step up into the truck, and the brakes. When we were test-driving it initially, the brakes were great until we put it in reverse, and then they started squeaking. These issues were concerning because the brakes were squeaking only in reverse, and the running boards were only coming out occasionally when we opened the doors. We reported the problems to the salesman, and they took the truck into their service center and said the running boards just had a button that was off, and the brakes were “aftermarket” brakes, according to the mechanic. We trusted them and still had concerns, but figured the brakes would eventually ease their way in after we started driving it more. That wasn’t the case, and my dad took my truck up to a Ford dealership near where he works back home, and they said that the brakes and rotors were bad, and the main squeak from the truck being in reverse was from the emergency brake. Then they said the pins in the running boards that make it go in and out were bad. A fix that should have been done when we initiated our concern at the dealership where we bought the truck. This was a bad sales experience for me, especially for my first big truck purchase. I learned a lot from this experience, and it is important to make sure you have an honest and clear salesperson who wants to build a relationship with you. Our sales guy, Sean, obviously wasn’t the only one accountable for this bad experience, but the service center should have done what was right, and they didn’t, and that is just wrong. I am just thankful the truck itself is in great shape, and it was just minor fixes on the truck, but it is just hard to believe they couldn’t fix the problems we had when we were there. I hope no one has to experience a sales experience where the person isn’t truthful and just wants to sell the car without making the problems right. My opinion on car salespeople changed that day, and it will be hard to change my opinion back. Finally, sales can be done in an ethical way, by being truthful, honest, and caring, but this wasn’t the case, and it was a bad experience for my father and me.
