Mary Kay Cosmetics is a beauty empire that was built by one woman with a passion – a passion to see saleswomen succeed. Mary Kay Ash started her career by selling books door-to-door, and then got a job at Stanley Home Products where a man she trained got the promotion instead of her. Determined to see women have a better chance in the sales sphere, she retired and began writing a book for women in business. It ended up becoming the business plan for Mary Kay Cosmetics, and she lauched the business with her sons as partners.

Mary Kay uses sales representatives in a way that few companies still do, and is dominated by female sales consultants. Mary Kay Ash believed that “People are definitely a company’s greatest asset. It doesn’t make any difference whether the product is cars or cosmetics. A company is only as good as the people it keeps.” With that mindset, Mary Kay continues to train consultants who are beloved by their fiercely loyal customers. Mary Kay Ash also understood that sales is more than just peddling a pretty product. My favorite quote from her is “Everyone has an invisible sign hanging from their neck saying, ‘Make me feel important.’ Never forget this message when working with people.” I think that perfectly sums up why Mary Kay became and continues to be such an empire of cosmetics – because its founder understood the importance of seeing each customer as a person, not just a buyer.
