A huge part of selling that is often not addressed is the mindset of a seller. Professor Sweet mentioned this a little bit in class today, but truthfully, sellers have to be confident in order to be successful. Whenever you are talking to someone, most of the time you can pick up on whether they are a confident and comfortable person or not. When someone is insecure and unsure of themselves, you can sense it and it often makes you uncomfortable. This is the same for when you are in a sales position. If you aren’t confident and sure of yourself, then your prospect will sense that and wonder if something is wrong with the product you are selling them.
This is not just about being a positive thinker, but knowing that your product or commodity you are selling them is valuable and worth their time. When you think of yourself as adding value to the prospect, rather than bothering them, your whole mindset will shift as a seller. Whatever it takes to come to this point in your selling process is worth it. Whether you have to give yourself a pep talk to boost your confidence or learn more about the product and the opportunities it can give your prospects, do it and success will be more likely to happen.
If your product is not something that you feel confident selling and giving your potential customers, that is a different story. Your product has to be something you know will benefit people. If you don’t believe in the product or wouldn’t buy it yourself, you probably shouldn’t be trying to sell it to other people either. Some salespeople don’t care about the value of the product, only that they make a commission off of it. This is what gives salespeople a bad reputation. Make sure you find something that is effective, good quality, and sustainable, and you will feel confident in offering it to prospects.
I strongly agree that mindset has a huge impact on your ability to sell as well as your growing intention behind the sale. When confident in your own ability as well as the ability of your product to benefit your customer, you will both develop your character as well as learn and develop your career abilities. Well said!
