The COVID-19 pandemic has had a large impact on everyone around the world. Many individuals have lost jobs, work remotely, or have had to change some aspect of their daily work lives in order to adjust to the current situation. This has been no different for many business who have had to make some difficult decisions throughout the past year. The automotive industry is not much different than any other industry in these respects, but has seen a new challenge in remote work. As individuals have been working from home during the pandemic, many companies are finding out that it is cheaper to continue doing remote work and not paying for office space. This allows for less individuals to be traveling outside their own home in order to do work. For individuals in this situation, having less cars may be an additional solution to current financial problems.

Because many people are working remotely, less people need to drive so their need for a car is decreasing. Families who previously had two or three cars may now only need one or two. As cars are expensive to purchase and to insure, many families could start selling cars to get rid of unwanted financial expenses as well as picking up a little extra liquid cash they previously did not have available. While this may seem daunting to many, This idea is no longer so far-fetched. Will more and more families truly be driving less and less?

  1. This is a really great point! I know a lot of people who will be staying remote post-covid. Another thing that less driving might have an impact on is the environment.

  2. I think some people will be driving less but could this affect the sports/luxury car markets where people use these cars for enjoyment and something to do when they leave the house. People may no longer want the 50 mpg prius and instead go for a 18 mpg Sports car to use for enjoyment.
