In high school, I was on a private robotics team. This team was not funded or backed by a school, which meant we needed to fundraise to support the team. Fundraising often involved selling our team to potential investors. Some of the sales tactics we used included bringing a live demonstration of our robot to show people who we wanted to get involved. We would also give a presentation describing our organization and everything we participate in. Our investors almost always had a referral from a team member or mentor which seemed to be key to securing funds.

  1. I agree that fundraising is a form of selling, and it’s amazing for students to learn this early on. For your robotics team, I find it interesting that you mentioned referrals and how they’ve impacted your team through fundraising. We don’t talk about it as much, but having referrals and word-of-mouth is really important to any product and makes selling easier for the seller. When the buyer has a trusted source, there’s all the more reason to buy or invest in the product. I think you bring up a unique selling position that works really well.
