Whenever I travel, I see so many different ways that sales comes into play. Whether that be advertisements for hotels, restaurants, attractions, or others, selling is everywhere when you travel. Another thing I have noticed when traveling is the deals and discounts from flight companies or travel plans that are offered to get people to fly or travel using their company. On my most recent flight towards the end, the flight attendant announced a promotion to sign up for an advantage program with that flight service. Even though it was brief, it caught my attention because of what they were selling. I don’t think many people listened to the announcement but I think the company could have done better if they didn’t gloss over it so much and presented the benefits of the service. All they did was announce it but they didn’t explain all that it entailed.

Another time I see selling when traveling is whenever locals sell and even prey on tourists. This is very common in foreign countries especially and even though I’ve not experienced a ton of this firsthand, I know how frustrating it can be to have items shoved at you that you didn’t ask for. I’ve gotten better at standing my ground when this happens but at first it was hard for me to do that and I felt intimidated. I think that’s why people don’t like to travel to certain places because of the forceful selling that happens in some countries. When I think about some of my favorite trips and places I’ve visited, those places were always peaceful and there weren’t a lot of tourists. It made the trip so much less stressful and I didn’t feel like so much attention was being drawn towards me as a traveler. Selling is everywhere when you travel and you have to look out for the people who have bad intentions, just like anywhere else.

  1. I really liked how you noted the way locals prey on tourists to try and make a quick sale. I noticed this when I was in Italy last year, especially when in the busier cities like Rome. It is so interesting to see how the concepts we learn in this class not on apply to real life, but can also help us make decisions.

  2. You made some great points about how selling shows up in real life experiences. Your example about the airline promotion specifically shows how important it is for companies to clearly communicate benefits.
