Recently I was talking to a guy that I know who owns a very successful construction business. They do a lot of remodeling on some very upscale homes. I’m always amazed by the clientele that he’s able to build for. He shared one of his foundational principles of the way he sells and interacts with his customers. He explained that very early in his business he decided that he would serve all customers the same, regardless of the price of the job. Whether he was installing a $200 entry door or whether he was doing a $1,000,000 remodeling job, he would treat every customer with honor and importance. Never would he portray to a customer that less expensive job was less important. Over the 15+ years that he’s been in business, this has served him well countless times. Many times, customers for whom he’s done small jobs have returned later to book larger projects. Especially in the construction industry, building trust with your customer is important. If you’ve done a small job for a customer and they trust you, it is very likely that when they have a much bigger project, they will call the person they already know and trust.
