To be completely honest, I’m not sure who would be categorized as some of the greatest sellers of all time. However, looking at how records and how sales relates to sports, I would have to say John Calipari would be one of the greats.
Calipari is the basketball coach at the University of Kentucky. They are currently 34-0 with many believing they are one of the best teams of all time. They have an incredible chance to have 9 players drafted in this years NBA draft. Why is this so important? Because Calipari had to sell these players on coming to Kentucky.
This might be Calipari’s best job yet as he won a National Title last year at Kentucky. Then, multiple starters came back and they added more talented freshman. There are so many items that play into this. Many highly-touted recruits want to be somewhere they can get playing time, be on a big stage, etc. But, instead they came to Kentucky. The biggest selling point, getting to the NBA. Calipari has sent an uncomparable number of his players to the NBA, including from his coaching days at Massachusetts and Memphis. Sure, Kentucky is the top choice to win this years’ title, but all the guys want to make it to the NBA, which is why they go to Kentucky.
Whether most see it or not, the sales job Calipari has had to do, is incredible. He’s established one of the greatest teams of all time, which is unheard of in these days with so many kids leaving school early to go to the NBA and others choosing playing time at other schools. So, the sales job Calipari has done, at all three schools combined, has to have made him one of the greatest salesman of all-time.
