The COVID-19 crisis has given fame to many different celebrities. For many this was the first time that the names Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx became household names. However, the biggest celebrity of the pandemic was the most unexpected one, Joe Exotic. Known to many as the “Tiger King,” Throughout the show, Joe Exotic is shown to be an excellent salesman. From moving and motivating people to help him accomplish his goals of saving tigers, or selling large amounts of merchandise from his gift shop, Joe Exotic was able to build a massive business because of it. Now, this wouldn’t be a sales blog without some form of lesson to be learned. The lesson to be learned from Joe Exotic is that of authenticity. The Tiger King has been accused of many things but inauthenticity is not one of them. People felt they could trust Joe because he was so authentic. You knew exactly who and what he was at any given time. This was one of the appeals to his persona and the reason he was excellent at sales.

  1. I have not watched the Tiger King but based on what I’ve heard about it I’m surprised how he managed to run his operation at such a large scale for so long. To pull that off would require a tremendously skillful salesperson who understands what it takes to gain people’s trust.

  2. I wrote about Joe Exotic too! I think Joe personality really helped him gain peoples trust. I think the downfall was Joe would say one thing and do another thing. In sales you can’t do that. Your actions and words need to coincide with each other to have the best results.

  3. Joe is a great example of authenticity being a key part of relationship building and how important that can be for sales. Being who you are is the best way to make real relationships with the people you meet.

  4. It’s hard to say if Joe Exotic is really a good salesman or just has a lot of charisma. Either way, he gets the job done! Nice post!
