This past summer I was offered an interesting sale through my dad. My dad owns and operates a business where he takes contract bids to remove and replace hazardous material in places where it should not be. With that job, he has quite a few close contacts within the government because often times the contracts are offered through state governments. A lot of his work tends to happen in Ohio, New York, Texas and on rare occasions places like Hawaii. But one of his contacts is in the Drug Enforcement Agency commonly referred to as the DEA. He has had multiple jobs with them. Every now and then he helps them deliver and destroy illegal drugs being passed around on the streets. This is where I come into play. In the past he has sold them pallets and other various products to help with the narcotic destruction process. A couple years ago, I was able to find a way to get free wooden pallets from my local hardware store. So, my dad offered me the job to collect all the pallets needed to fulfill the needs of the DEA. We agreed that we would split the profits since he technically was the one to get the offer. The order was then in my hands so I quickly went to work collecting and gathering appropriately shaped and sized pallets. After an hour of work, I got what I needed. The next day we drove to the DEA’s warehouse where the pallets were to be dropped off. After unloading them, the job was finished and I was content.
One thing I learned from this whole experience was that when selling, it is good to use your resources. Not only did I use my dad to get the job offer for me but I also used pallets that I knew I could get for free. Having these free pallets went on to save me $100 since I didn’t need to buy any. Another thing I learned is that if you do a good job, customers are likely to return since I will deliver more pallets to them in the future. All in all, it was a great experience and a quick way to make some money.
The resourcefulness that you displayed here is a great characteristic for a salesman.
Thinking about sales as not only getting your product into someone else’s hands, but also that we are trying to get our good will into the hands of our customers so that they come back to us.
