By now most of us have heard the story of Kyle MacDonald: the masterful tradesman who was able to trade a paperclip up to a house. But how does one start with something seemingly useless and end up with a full sized home? The answer is simple: sales. Though much discussion and persuasion, MacDonald was able to convince 14 people that the item he possessed was worth more than the one that he desired. This story is intriguing because it is unique. Most people do not possess the skills to essentially sell a paperclip for a house. MacDonald was not only able to sell his various items, he was able to sell himself to the media. He was received global media recognition for his feat and was even featured on a TED talk.

I love stories like this because I think that the aspect of persuasion in regards to sales is fascinating. Trading a paperclip up to a house is not only impressive, it’s wildly creative, and a prime example of how having skills in sales can lead you to many more things than just the traditional, colloquial view of what sales is (like a greasy man selling a car).
These kinds of stories are fascinating, the way that he was able to trade from a paperclip to a house! Having skills in sales can be, potentially, one of the best, and most important, skills to have.
