Sales happen in a lot of different ways and in a lot of different settings. Whether that is a girl scout selling cookies to someone at the mall or Thomas Jefferson getting land from the French, the world is filled with all sorts of sales. Every sale that happens offers a teaching point to better off your sales skill. Even when a purchase falls through it can provide the seller with an area to grow. A good place to see real life sales is in different movies. Although these sales in movies aren’t exactly true to actual sales out in the real world, they still can provide insight and ideas to help the seller.
One movie that shows the brilliance of sellers is the movie Air. The premise of this movie is how Nike was able to sign Michael Jordan to a lucrative shoe deal. The movie takes place in 1984, and at that time Nike was struggling to make sales. The marketing team was looking for opportunities to make new and exciting shoes that would increase the sales. In their research they were looking for newly drafted players to get a shoe deal. One player that they thought to have a lot of potential was Michael Jordan. This wasn’t the easiest shoe deal in the world. Nike did not have the most money and brands like Converse and Adidas held more value. In order to make the deal, the head of Nike had to create benefits for the customer. To make the deal more desirable to Michael Jordan, Nike created his own shoe and offered to pay for fines for having too much color in the shoe.
Another movie with a memorable sales scene is from Tommy Boy. The main character Tommy Callahan takes over his dads company but he is a less than sufficient salesman. At first he couldn’t sell anything but once he was calm, cool, and collected then he was able to start selling brake pads. There are many takeaways from these movies that could help anyone out making a sale.
I love how you tied sales into a bunch of different non-traditional things like the movies and even the expansion of the United States! Awesome post.
Sales is everything and it is everywhere you’ve done a great job of highlighting that in instances and in movies. I love the reference to the movie Air, which truly was a blockbuster sell for Nike and came to be one of the best deals ever. Tommy Boy was an incredible movie about a guy truly connecting with companies to save his company. He needed to find his groove in sales and quickly realized that failures were needed to succeed and once he did succeed, he was able to find a way to bring back the business and peace to his hometown.
