A few weeks ago, I was interviewed for a sales position with a small company in Youngstown, Ohio. The company gave me a great opportunity for employment with a good base pay, high commission rates, full benefits, and a company car. Overall its a good offer for me. I was excited and came home to tell my parents. They both know that I want to be in sales and were excited with me. However, my grandma was visiting and was so upset that her grandson was going to be a “slimy” salesperson. She told me how annoying sales people are and how corny that sales jobs are. The negative experiences that she has had really make her unwelcoming to sales people and they make her feel uneasy. I decided to try and talk to her about what I’d be doing day to day and how I thought my work could help others. Rather than being pushy and trying to just force products on people, I wanted to tell her how I can be helpful and really beneficial to my customers.
Last week, for the same job, I had to get a pre-employment drug test. So i walk into the doctors office at the urgent care to get tested and the doctor asks me what kind of job that I will be doing. I went on to tell him that I would be in sales and was about o explain what I would be doing. Before I could get the words out of my mouth, he started this skit and was acting like he was an obnoxious car salesman. It honestly reminded me of Danny DeVito. He was a short and kind of chubby doctor so it was funny, but I was kind of taken back that he had to do that. I really think he has a negative opinion on sales people.
