There has been a huge shift in our culture over the past 20-or so years as online sellers have become more and more prevalent. While the internet is a good platform to connect and streamline many parts of selling, communicating, and simplifying the management of asset flow, it also diminishes the tradition selling experience. While it is not necessarily a bad change from the traditional way of selling door-to-door, it has greatly reduced the amount of in-person selling people engage in. We as a society have been becoming accustom to online selling which has has a strong negative impact on us. With more and more of our “fun” shopping being online, we lose the social aspect of shopping which greatly contributes to the joy and fulfillment that we want from our shopping experiences. While some shops try to make the shopping pleasant or fun, because there is limited interaction and practically no face to face interactions, it does not sufficiently make up for the loss of socializing. I think that this lack of socializing is also contributing to the massive overshopping people are doing. People are purchasing incredible amounts of things because people will sell “Magical experiences/products that will solve your non-existent need!” which is really only beneficial under very specific circumstances. The selling techniques used to not work to the betterment of the buyers; Influencers will make broad sweeping claims to market to as much of their followers as they can; without spending time to get to know them and their pain. People are bombarded with advert and now do not have a good sense of what they need or when to stop purchasing. We see people doing large, extravagant, and useless shopping halls and it fuels people’s dissatisfaction.

  1. I would tend to agree with this! While I do buy smaller or more last-minute products online, it irritates me to hear about people making major purchases from behind a computer screen. For me personally, if I was laying down more than a few hundred dollars for an item, I would want a sales representative to help me make sure that my decision is good! I also think that it ends up costing businesses more in customer service expenses, since a lot of the time online purchases don’t necessarily work out for the consumer.

  2. Very much agree! The internet can be very helpful, but being face to face with the product and its provider is key to really make sure you’ve made the right choice.

  3. I can see how online shopping has changed the way we shop and why we shop. Socializing during shopping definitely made shopping more enjoyable because you could feel a connection with someone during the process. Shopping online has made it easier to spend more and give into overconsumption because everyone’s trying to act quickly on sales and impress each other.
