Before you can close the deal on a big sale, one for the most important personal qualities that a salesperson can posses is the ability to sell themselves. Without the confidence of your own abilities to say what needs to be said and convey a solid pitch, the deal in unlikely to go down. How we can all achieve that confidence however is a very different matter. For some people it can be confidence in abilities because of previous business or sales experience and success. For others it may be they have recently graduated and are hungry for the success they have seen so many of their peers around them achieve. Whatever the case me be, it is important to be confident in your own abilities without coming across as cocky or rude.
One way it may be possible to achieve this demeanor is by being able to accurately describe your story to the client is a way that relates to their own. Once there is an established relationship, you can further sell your story in relation to that of the client. This is a way that you can make them confident that your story and success can soon be theirs for the taking.
I absolutely agree that there is a fine balance between appearing confident and coming across as arrogant. Demeanor, body language, and the actual words spoken all directly correlate to this. Great post!
When you say “story” do you mean your personal story, or the story of the product you’re selling? I feel like selling yourself and selling the product is one in the same…you cant sell your product without selling yourself, and if you’re selling yourself without the product, you’re not a good sales person…
Great post, Ben! Storytelling is so important, as it can be a way to engage with your customer in a new way!
