This semester I have been looking for an engineering internship. Two years ago I worked at a manufacturing company in Pennsylvania. This company came to mind first, but they were not currently offering any internships. I decided to create a one-page document describing exactly the internship I wanted. Although ambitious, this was ideal because I designed the internship around exactly what was most interesting to me and what I would be most excited about. During this process, I was thinking about selling myself. I was selling myself and trying to convince the company to hire me. I also had to factor in what was important and beneficial to the company. And so I designed the internship with the hope of adding a lot of value to the manufacturing process. The company was so excited about my passion for the internship and my taking initiative to design it myself, that they gave me the job.

I am currently looking for internships myself and also found that a lot of work goes into selling my skills and talents. Simply being honest with employers about my strengths and weaknesses has gone a long way for me personally though! It was also cool to see that you could design your own internship for the company as well. Taking initiative is a great skill to have for any employer and I’m sure that they value it (especially in the engineering field.)
I think it is really hard to sell yourself. However, being honest and open with the employer is key. Taking initiative is also very important as it shows that you are able to think independently. Great work!
I have also recently been undergoing internship opportunities. I agree with you that the most important thing is finding out how do I sell myself. Alot of it is explaining how your skills relate to their company and what benefits you can bring to the table. In your case you were able to differentiate yourself by expressing your passion for this line of work. I think you showed a great example here on how to stand out in the job market.
Selling yourself is a huge part of getting a job/internship. It’s important to understand what you bring to the table and how you can fit into a company’s culture. It sounds like you did a good job of applying sales skills to land your internship.
