For the past two summers I have worked in the Outer Banks. I lived with a friend of mine and had free housing. I was working for an hourly rate setting up beach equipment. This winter I was deciding whether or not to return to the beach to work in the Outer Banks for the last summer. I am going into my senior year, so the thought of an internship had crossed my mind as the “right thing to do”. I was contemplating this a lot and then I went home for Christmas break. While I was home I began to discuss this decision with my older brother. He was talking to me about opportunities and people that he could connect me with. He was able to have a conversation with me without explicitly trying to sway me towards an internship. He was listening to why I wanted to go back to the beach; my reasons were that the last two summers have been the most fun summers of my life and that I made good money. Working a summer job at the beach is also only an option for me while I am in college as I plan to have a fulltime job after I graduate. My brother listened to what I had to say and told me about the potential opportunities he had for me. I ended up settling on getting a sales internship for the summer. The reason why I changed my mind was less about weighing out positives and negatives and more about the conversation I had. I knew that my brother cared about my future and that what he was saying was worth listening to. This shows that how you communicate with people when you sell is crucial. Obviously, this is a special case as it was my brother selling an idea to me. However, making the buyer feel comfortable and feek that their best interest is in mind is important for making a sale.

  1. That’s so true! I’ve been having to make a similar decision about this summer, whether to return to my usual summer job or try to branch out and get an internship. I totally agree with you though in that the way anyone tries to have a conversation about that, not trying to tell you what to do but just explaining their thoughts, makes you much more willing to do what they think you should do. Great post!
