If you did not know that today was Valentine’s Day, then you may as well been living under a rock or you do not have a reason to celebrate this holiday. However, I would image if you are anything like me and you are single you still may be celebrating by giving a little sister, mother, or grandmother a call. Now everyone knows about the stereotypical gifts that are given on this holiday: everything from roses, stuffed animals, jewelry, and of course chocolate. These gifts are often very common and chocolate tends to be a fan favorite even in the midst of an unusual year.
As many people are grateful for the friends and family that they have this year, sales have gone up for chocolate and these other gifts. People are wanting to show a sense of togetherness and love for their friends and family. A CNBC report has shown that 86% of Americans are buying chocolate and candies for other people this Valentine’s Day. Over the past 52 weeks, chocolate consumption has gone up 4.7% and so called premium chocolate is up by double as Valentine’s Day approaches; this information was found by Ferrero’s Phil DeConto during an interview with CNBC.
I too have been apart of this purchasing and a recipient of the sweet gifts this year. Chocolate is an easy gift to buy and send to those we care about this time of year and can be affordable, even on a college budget. This is part of the reason that the sale of chocolate is so attractive this time of year: especially this year. Chocolate sales are bumping due to the appreciation many are showing to more than just a significant other.
Even when walking into the local Grove City Walmart you can see an entire Valentine’s Day section filled with many of these gifts and chocolate is definitely one of them. The sales of these chocolates does not surprise me. This time of year is very welcoming to large sales from Sarris Candies, Hershey, and many others. So while this time of year celebrates love by the giving of sweets, nothing is sweeter to chocolate companies than a lot of sales this year.

This post is very interesting to see just how much people really buy into these holidays such as Valentine’s Day and other “Hallmark Holidays” even for people like us who are single and do not have a significant other. It is a cool thing to see how people still show people they care through little gestures on Valentine’s Day since they may not have that special person and this gesture could make them feel more appreciated on this day.
