Back in high school, I used to go shopping at PacSun all the time. However, being as broke as I was, I only justified my purchases to the sales section. There was a girl who had really big, curly, red hair who was always there when I walked in. She noticed I was a regular customer, so in the beginning she would just greet me and let me get the clothes that I wanted. I didn’t know it at the time, but she actually was paying attention to what my style preferences were instead of bombarding me with selections. After she got a decent look at what I preferred to wear, she started assembling outfits for me from the newer (and more expensive) collections. She did it in a way that wasn’t over the top but very specific to what I wanted. I ended up trying on clothes that she picked out all the time and walked out spending more money than I originally planned. She used a good long-term sales approach. Instead of pressuring me, she spent more time getting to know me and ended up making more money off of  me as a result. I believe that she was excellent at sales. She did a good job at balancing attention without overstepping boundaries. She seemed more like a cool friend who would pick out outfits for me instead of a pushy salesperson. She understood that the key to sales were relationships.

  1. This is so cool. I don’t think I have ever had a sales rep wait on me like this girl did. I also really love sales, that’s all I shop, but I find that most reps ignore me because of that. They sometimes think I’m not worth the time I guess. So glad that this girl capitalized on your shopping habits and gave you more a what you wanted. She is a very good salesperson.

  2. I think maintaining a good salesperson-customer relationship, without overstepping boundaries, is an increasingly difficult thing to do. However, it is also becoming more and more important in the sales world. Thanks for sharing your story!

  3. This is so interesting. I’m not sure if personally I would be appreciative of the salesperson’s notice of me, creeped out, or just frustrated that she was bringing me expensive clothes. It definitely shows though that she was willing to hold her ground and create a tailored, positive sales experience for you and make some more money in the process. She had good intentions and cared about you as her customer while also trying to be a savvy, non pushy sales person. She is a good example of what we as sales people should strive to be like when dealing with customers, patient and attentive to them and their needs. So interesting!
