Manchester City has become one of the biggest names in European soccer over the past decade and there is good reason for their success. In 2012 Manchester City stole the Premier League title away from cross town rivals Manchester United with Sergio Agüero’s 93rd minute goal on the final game of the season. Since their 2012 championship, the team has seen an abundance of success; everything is going well with Pep Guardiola join the team back in February of 2016, the resigning of big name players, and the acquisition of big names from other clubs as well. Manchester City’s new found wealth has greatly helped their success but is not the selling point for many individuals.

The club has seen success all across the UK– Premier League Titles (4), League Cup (5), Continental Cup (3), and Community Shield (3)– the club still seeks European glory. The Champions League is the biggest competition in Europe for individual clubs and Manchester City has never won. This competition is comprised of the best clubs across Europe with a long and difficult way to qualify for and then give you hand in competition.

This has becomes City’s selling point for new players and those still currently on the squad: come help us win the Champions League. They can easily promise domestic glory and that is often part of their pitch, but the chance to bring a club their first ever Champions League title is an opportunity in which many want to be involved.

The club’s current form has them unbeaten in the 2021, 18 straight wins in all competitions, and 13 straight in the Premier League with their most recent win today against Arsenal one to nil. While the transfer deadline has come and gone until the summer, City’s new signings for this season are buying into another Premier League title and the dream of Champions League title.

  1. I love this example and relating sales to sports. I feel the Tampa Bay Bucs will be selling themselves a lot this offseason to try to make another push at a Super Bowl and get some good players for cheaper than they could play elsewhere. “Selling” a super bowl or a premier league championship is one way to help lift a city.
