I recently went in for an interview and I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of transparency my interviewers had with me. They were saying most of my day would be on the phone and that there will be times you hate the job. They kept asking, “Is this were you saw yourself after graduating?” They would bring up the hours, locations, prospecting, and dealing with people being rude, and I kept thinking about Sandlers Rule #7.
Sandler Rule #7: You never have to life prospecting, you just have to do it.
- focus on the end result
- prospecting is a selection process
- cast your net
When I brought up David Mattsons book, they nodded in agreement. It was stressed that it was a needed part of the job and that you just had to keep going, even when you want to call it day. I think that this concept can be applied to multiple parts of life, but it is very fitting for prospecting.
Katie I wonder if you could explain what it means to life prospecting… What do you mean by this?
But in all seriousness, when I worked at Cutco, this was by far the worst part. I felt like I was asking my friends and family to help me out so I wouldn’t have to ask strangers.
I think that many people don’t realize it is very important to cast the net and try for several people. Many people give up after a number of rejections. I wonder how the other rules are prominent in interview processes.
