Early every summer for the passed several years I have had a yard sale. Yard sales are good ways to get rid of stuff you don’t use anymore and make some money doing it. Having one is also a good way to practice some selling techniques and work on persuading people that they will be better off with the stuff you don’t want.
I have done fairly well with my yard sales the past few years. My parents are busy entrepreneurs and don’t have much time to think about or deal with their old things they don’t use anymore. So they let me go all around the house and the business and find all the stuff that nobody uses and they let me sell it and keep all the money. I also collect things from other places as well. For example, last summer I was driving and I saw an old leather couch out by the side of the road. I picked it up and took it home. I put it out at my sale and sold it for $10. I think I made about $600 yard sailing last summer.
I am currently gathering my items for this summer’s sale. I have a whole stall in my garage filled with stuff to sell so far. I will hold my sale outside my dad’s office on the next Saturday it doesn’t rain.
One of the most important things for a yard sale is to have it in nice weather. I think people are happier and more likely to spend money in nicer weather. Another thing I have learned is to ask the customer to name their price. My number one goal at my yard sale is to go home with less stuff than I had before. I understand in most other sales situations I shouldn’t settle like that but in a yard sale situation it is worth it. When people feel like they are going to get a good deal they are more likely to buy. More buying means I’m taking less home.
