I found this interesting article by Claire Ellise that offers 22 essential sales skills. In the article, she talks about a lot of the same things we are learning in class. I will only mention a few I believe are really true and that maybe I’d most likely use the most.

The first one is obvious and seems intuitive, but I liked how she described it. The first one is “effective communication”, which we all know is highly important in a sale’s conversation. While some are more skilled at building communication skills, others need more time and ability to master the skills. Claire suggests the 7cs to improve communication skills, which are the following: Clear, concise, concrete, correct, coherent, complete, and courteous. Using clear and simple language is important in any sale’s conversation. Being concise helps remove uncertainty. Being concrete and specific gives more clarity in the sale. Have correct information makes the sale smoother and makes you more trustworthy. Being coherent is important when trying to convey any message. Complete means being as detailed as you can for the potential buyer. And lastly, being courteous is important in any conversation. Showing respect and having empathy is important in sales and shows genuine care for the customers.

Number six in the list is sales demoing, which I thought was interesting, because we don’t always talk about this skill. Customers will be more likely to trust a product they can see working in real time. Instead of just listing features, the customer is able to fully see what the product can do and how it will help solve their problems.

Number nine is collaboration. Working with others is important in many jobs, but it also important in sales. Collaboration brings forth more trust, team building, and stronger relationships even among the customers.

Number ten is social selling. Social media has become an important form of marketing and communication for many companies and is a central platform for businesses to personally connect with their customers. Companies need to evolve with technology and continue staying up with the latest trends.

There are several great skills Claire offers, so I’ll attach the link below for a further read up of what she suggests.

  1. Wow, it definitely sounds like there were some important sales skills to be taken away from this article. Number six really sticks out to me. It is so vital to show the customers how the product can benefit them. A common mistake is just listing the features. Also number ten touches on social media selling. I agree this is becoming more important daily. Learning how to market online offers so many more connections.
