In today’s class, Dan got to speak to us about sales, and there was a lot that I learned from his talk. Dan started a business with his friend a couple of years after college, and it led to many fights and arguments. He valued that friendship more than the business, so they separated. Dan has been through a lot and knew he needed to take the next level in sales. He was making $32,500 as a single-income family with his wife as a stay-at-home mom, with his three children. He heard of the Sandler training, and it was $6,000 for the training. He was worried at first, but said that he needed to do it to take it to the next level. He did it, and the following year he made $250,000, and then it doubled the year after. Dan made the change, and it changed his life and his perspective on sales. From his talk in class, I learned that if we are too stuck up on talking about self then we need to make a change. In class, we tried an activity, and it was hard not to say, I, me, we, or my, mine, and our. It was not easy to answer a question without saying these words, but it was eyeopening and in sales, it is not about you. Another big thing that Dan talked about was body language and showing confidence or stress on the way you sit or listen. Body language is so important in sales, and it can ultimately show you who is more confident in a conversation, or who is more worried. He mentioned that guys will cross their arms showing they are closed, and I didn’t know that because, as a student, I do that sometimes just because it is comfortable. I didn’t know that this is a sign that I am closed and not interested, and that shows to a speaker like Dan, and that is so important; we must be engaging with our body language and be able to pick up on the little things from that. We might say we noticed subcontiously but we didn’t notice contiously and that is where picking up the signs is necessary. Overall, Dan taught me so much and helped me learn so many valuable lessons to take forward with me as I continue to grow in my sales knowledge.
